MODEL HISTORY
The 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado is one of the most distinctive American cars of the 1960s. At first sight, it looks like a classic luxury coupe with a long hood and low silhouette, but beneath its elegant design was hidden technology that was completely exceptional for its time. The Toronado became one of the first American production cars in a long time that used front-wheel drive.
The source of power was a 425 cubic inch (7.0 liter) Oldsmobile Super Rocket V8 OHV. The power was transmitted to the front wheels via a special Turbo-Hydramatic 425 automatic transmission. This unusual connection allowed not only superior dynamics, but also better use of space in the interior, which was exceptionally spacious and comfortable due to the absence of a center tunnel.
The Toronado chassis was designed with an emphasis on stability and comfort. Independent suspension with torsion bar was used at the front, and the rear axle was rigid, sprung by coil springs. Thanks to the weight distribution and front-wheel drive, the Toronado demonstrated confident and calm behavior at high speeds for its size. Disc brakes on the front axle were available as an option, which was still rather exceptional in this class in 1967.
The design of the 1967 model continued the original Toronado's launch, but brought a slightly modernized front end with a characteristic radiator grille and hidden headlights. The wide body and long frameless doors emphasized the luxurious and confident character of the car. The chassis was tuned primarily for comfort, yet the Toronado offered stable behavior and surprisingly good driving characteristics for its size.
The 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado remains a symbol of American technical courage. The combination of a large V8, front-wheel drive and a distinctive design made it a car that was not afraid to break the established rules and is still one of the valued classics of its era.
